With the migration of consumer spending drifting toward the DIY (do it yourself) flooring in the early 1970s and the advancement of the vinyl flooring patterns and designs, the cork tile market began to suffer a decline. This was accompanied by Armstrong’s decision to exit both the cork and the linoleum flooring business in the United States. Throughout all of this, Dodge Cork Company continued to sell its portfolio of organic cork flooring products.

The 1980s witnessed a glimmer of interest in environmental alternatives to the dominant vinyl products offered in the flooring industry. With the reintroduction of linoleum (a cork by-product floor covering) to the US market in the late 1980s, cork flooring once again received the market’s attention.
